Disclaimer: I am one sonographer with a viewpoint. My viewpoint is not universal, but I will never try to persuade or misdirect you on purpose. Always do your own research!
There are many types of DMS programs in the United States. Some offer certificates, many offer Associate's degrees and more and more schools are offering Bachelor's degrees in diagnostic medical ultrasound. (Does matter which one you get? More on that here eventually)
No mater the final awarded degree, every program is part of higher education institution that has most likely sought out some sort of accreditation. There are A LOT of ways a college can obtain accreditation, but they all come down to being regional, national, or programmatic. If a college does not have accreditation, then they really aren't school, can't accept financial aid and tons of other consequences.
So what type of accreditation should you look for when looking for a DMS program? Welcome to the debate.
Let's start with CAAHEP accreditation and why some think this is the only path to sonography. The Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP) is a programmatic postsecondary accrediting agency recognized by the Council for Higher Education Accreditation (CHEA) and carries out its accrediting activities for 32 health science professions, including sonography.
